Greg Sharpe to Miss Nebraska Football Call Friday as UNL Lecturer, Local Broadcaster Fills In
Sharpe to Miss First Game Since 1991
Greg Sharpe, the voice of Nebraska football for more than three decades, will miss his first game in the booth since 1991 when the Huskers open their season against Northwestern on Friday night. Sharpe is out with a non-COVID related illness, and Matt Coatney, a lecturer in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Communication Studies and a local broadcaster, will fill in for him.
Sharpe has been the play-by-play announcer for Nebraska football radio broadcasts since 1991, and he has also called Husker basketball games since 1992. He is one of the most recognizable voices in Nebraska sports, and his absence from the booth will be noticeable.
Coatney to Call His First Husker Game
Coatney is a familiar voice to Nebraska sports fans, as he has been calling high school football and basketball games for the Nebraska School Activities Association for the past 15 years. He is also the play-by-play announcer for the Lincoln Saltdogs baseball team.
Coatney said he is honored to fill in for Sharpe and that he is looking forward to calling his first Husker football game. He said he knows it will be a big challenge, but he is confident that he can do a good job.
Sharpe Expected to Return Soon
Sharpe is expected to return to the booth next week when the Huskers host North Dakota. He said he is feeling better and that he is looking forward to getting back to work.
